ETHEL WITH THE LONG FACE The 1930s saw a high point in studio portrait photography : sandwiched between the stiff poses of the Victorian era and the self-obsessed postures of the Selfie age. I have no idea who Ethel was, but she sent love down the decades along with her photo.

Ten From Halifax 6 : Woolshops, New Shops
WOOLSHOPS CART, HALIFAX (c1967) This photograph dates from the late 1960s, before the Woolshops area was redeveloped. That's the New Talbot Inn behind the cart and the abattoir on the left. Now it's all M&S and TopShop.
Ten From Halifax 5 : North Bridge Patina
HALIFAX GAS WORKS & BEACON HILL FROM NORTH BRIDGE (c1968) The colours in old slides and photographs fade over the years, like the memories they contain. The process is - like the patina on a bronze sculpture - unpredictable. In this case it appears to have enhanced the beauty of this scene from North Bridge.
The Best Of All Beverages
FROM THE DAILY EXPRESS, 24 APRIL 1900 What a tempting prospect - eight gallons of non-intoxicating beer for only sixpence. And could that be the late Ken Dodd advertising this special offer?
Ten From Halifax 4 : Transition
HALIFAX IN TRANSITION - DEAN CLOUGH (c1985) I must have taken this photograph thirty or more years ago. It shows Dean Clough and All Souls' Church. It was a time of transition, a time when mill buildings were changing from carpets to car insurance, from weaver to web.

The Faded Lifeboat
THE PICTURE WITHIN 3 : THE FADED LIFEBOAT My first thought was that there was a problem with the print - some fading, scratching, taring or the like. The "problem", however, is with the wall of the pub where layers of public house archaeology are on display.
Ten From Halifax 3 : Piece Hall Now
HALIFAX PIECE HALL (2017) Luckily the 1970s plan to demolish the Piece Hall and build a new shopping centre was abandoned. After a recent refurbishment the Piece Hall is now one of the undoubted jewels in the architectural crown that is Halifax.
A Card For Gladys
A Mother's Day tribute to my mother, Gladys. This photograph must have been taken when I was about one year old - in the summer of 1949. It's my card for her - Happy Mother's Day
