Concrete Days

Today’s desktop calendar image takes me back to my days in Sheffield. In the late 1970s we lived in Crookesmoor, and a short walk down Oxford Street would take me to the Upperthorpe flats, where I took this photograph more than 40 years ago.

When Burdock Way was built 50 years ago, Pellon Lane and Gibbet Street went over, and Hopwood Lane went under; but poor old Lister Lane was decapitated. Here is a picture of mine from 1972 of the crime in progress. In the background Elsie Whitely looks sadly on.

The latest in my “Looking Back” series has been published in the Halifax Courier. This week, I look back at Dean Clough Mills.
