Industrial Gravestones

If you walk the cobbled streets of Halifax and other Yorkshire towns, you are surrounded by industrial gravestones, memorials to an age now gone, inscribed with the familiar names – the Crossleys, Akroyds, Shaws, and Crowthers. Beware of nostalgia – these were rarely happy places; more often they were temples to muck, work, sweat and the profits of others. All memorials have a tale to tell, all gravestones remind us of where we came from.

  1. I really like this metaphor, especially with your grim image of dark foreboding textures. I took a look at Shaw Lane in the Google street views, 2021 and 2009. With its bright sunlit colors it looks less cheerless and solemn but the cobblestone pattern in the street and the imposing stone walls no doubt still make it a morbid monument to industry when storm clouds gather.
