Monumental Sculpture

One should be able to nominate buildings as items of monumental sculpture, thus ensuring their preservation not for what they contain, but simply for the way they look, the shape they make, and the emotions they engender. I would like to nominate this group of buildings in Sowerby Bridge. Let’s pickle them in aspic and sell little plastic models of them in souvenir shops throughout the land.

  1. This is a grand photo, Alan, and a worthy endeavor to record such quirky examples of vernacular architecture. I’m rather pleased that Google Maps 3-D View let me find where you took this photo. You were in the Lidl supermarket parking lot next to the Rochdale Canal. The map even identifies the building as the Mulhalls Mill. The chimney tower is unnamed but is much taller than your perspective suggests. I suspect it will remain preserved for many more generations just because it would be a big pain to remove.
