The Line-Out, Halifax 1982

I assume that this is the railway line out of Halifax heading towards the tunnel under Beacon Hill although I can’t quite work out where I took it from. Could that possibly be where Discovery Road is now? 40 years on, I suspect the scene will be very different now.

  1. Hi
You pose the question about where the photo was taken from – I hope I can jog your memory.
The signal box in the middle distance is the Halifax East box on the end of Platform 3. The platform in the centre running to the right foreground is Platform 4. You must have been standing either on the northern end of Platform 5, or where the platform had been – I believe Platform 5 and 6 were eventually dismantled about the time the photo was taken but I don’t have an exact date. The wall on the left ran under the full width of Station Approach and was the main support for the 1880s booking offices above. The track adjacent to Platform 4 is joined by the original Goods Loop coming in from the left having also passed under Station Approach. Although originally these lines would have offered a route to the Beacon Hill tunnel, by the time this photo was taken, this single track only ran over the Charlestown Road viaduct to North Bridge; the track would have been lifted before the viaduct was demolished in 1983/84? By 1982 the track running alongside Platform 3 had been lifted leaving only Platforms 1 and 2 with track, and it is these lines that can be seen in the distance beyond the signal box, running over the Beacon Hill viaduct to the tunnel.
    Kindest regards
