Northern Capitals 3 : Yours Truly

The question I have been asking myself since I acquired this 90-year-old photo album is, who took the photographs? I am now on to page three and I find the first hint of an answer. A photograph has been removed - as far as I can tell, the only one to have been removed from … Continue reading Northern Capitals 3 : Yours Truly

Northern Capitals 2 : The Ghost Of Kronburg

We continue on our tour of Northern Capitals via the 1925 photograph album I bought at an antique shop. We are still in Kronburg in Denmark, and we get to meet "the sentry on the platform where the ghost walked", as we wander through the sunlit courtyards of the old castle. Our photographer appears, by … Continue reading Northern Capitals 2 : The Ghost Of Kronburg

Northern Capitals 1 : Kronborg Castle

Whilst wondering around an antique shop this afternoon I discovered a little old album of photographs, modestly enough priced at just £8. It contained about fifty photographs, all taken on a cruise on board the SS City Of Nagpur in July and August 1925. Proprietorial Pride Plus

A Blackpool Treat

This tiny studio portrait was taken at Buckley's Studio at Regents Square, Blackpool on the 28th August 1916. It is highly likely that this is a young lass from one of the northern towns visiting Blackpool for a Bank Holiday treat. A day out at Blackpool and a holiday portrait to save all your life … Continue reading A Blackpool Treat

With Best Love

WITH BEST LOVE FROM THE FADING PAST There is something wonderful when old photographs fade, so that the person almost merges into the background like a memory merging into time. I have no idea who this lady was, but she has written on the back of the photograph, "With best love".

The Man With The Unenhanced Beard

The Man With The Unenhanced Beard (1890s) This Victorian Cabinet Card from the studio of John Leslie Thomas Shawcross of Blackburn had been touched-up by the photographer in order to enhance the gentleman's beard. I have digitally removed the enhancement to restore it to its natural beauty.

Ethel With The Long Face

ETHEL WITH THE LONG FACE The 1930s saw a high point in studio portrait photography : sandwiched between the stiff poses of the Victorian era and the self-obsessed postures of the Selfie age. I have no idea who Ethel was, but she sent love down the decades along with her photo.

The Faded Lifeboat

THE PICTURE WITHIN 3 : THE FADED LIFEBOAT My first thought was that there was a problem with the print - some fading, scratching, taring or the like. The "problem", however, is with the wall of the pub where layers of public house archaeology are on display.
